The Other Side of the Sun: A Novel (Wheaton Literary Series)
Published in Hardcover by Harold Shaw Pub (April, 1996)
Author: Madeleine L'Engle
Average review score:

Absolutely Wonderful
The Other Side of the Sun was one of the first books that actually made me really cry. I didn't just get teary-eyed, I sobbed. It is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read, and it tells a story filled with both wonderful, and terrible events. The book teaches so much and is so unique-like all of Madeleine L'Engle's books. It reminds me of Ilsa, another of her books that is really hard to find. The Other Side of the Sun is filled with characters you will fall in love with and others that you will hate. It is extraordinary.

A Story That Transcends Preferences, a story for everyone!
I am a Madeleine L'Engle fan and this is my favorite book ever.

The story is told through the eyes of Stella a woman in her eighties returning to her beach home in the deep south.
She tells of first coming there as a newly married young bride from England in 1910. The place is beautiful and wild and completely out of her realm of experience. Her words touch a place at the depths of the soul.
She has married in to the Renier family a genteel, old money southern family and must get to know them in her husbands absense. The charecters are rich and exotic and well developed. One of these is Mado the grandmother whose influence is still quite strong and whose wisdom, fortitude and love remain though she no longer lives. The housekeeper Honoria,an African woman of royal bearing, is full of goodness and peaceful strength. There is also the eccentric but lovable Aunties who live in the past, quote Shakespeare and other literary greats and argue with one another.

There is intrigue and mystery as well as an element of danger threatening to errupt in to violence. It becomes clear the destrutive nature of hatred can not be taken for granted.
The story has the quality of being haunting and lovely and upliftingly joyous. It is a journey of love, tragedy and triumph, of "loves terrible other side", the other side of the sun. It captures the Era of the Post Civil War South in all of it's turbulence and beauty and includes all the ingredients that make a great story. What ever type of reading you prefer, what ever authors you enjoy this book is for you, this story transcends preferences.

A must, must read
I read this to get my 800 pages/quarter for English class, and it couldn't have been more worth it. I picked it up off the shelf because I was a L'engle fan and a sucker for titles, and haven't looked back since. It's a fantastic window into a world I've never thought about, insight into the life of someone different from yet similar to myself and a brilliant, touching perspective on the power of love, hate and their intertwining. Now I consider myself a L'engle addict!!! The characters are so brilliant, powerful, realistic and SPECIAL. It's really heart wrenching @ the end, beyond all prediction or comprehension!! don't miss it for the world.

Tozer Speaks to Students: Chapel Messages Preached at Wheaton College
Published in Paperback by Christian Pubns (December, 1998)
Authors: A. W. Tozer and Lyle W. Dorsett
Average review score:

Straight talk about the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God
You don't have to be from Chicago to love him, but it helps. Tozer speaks the truth in a straight-up, no-nonsense, hearty way.
"To become a stronger Christian take these 5 steps", he says:
1. Don't trifle with sin
2. Don't steal God's glory
3. Don't own anything (actually don't let things own you)
4. Don't gossip
5. Don't defend yourself!

Beside this list of "Don'ts" stands a man who is honest, thoughtful, modest, and speaks with power and conviction. It is very much like the Lord speaking to me. Tozer reveals himself as a preacher and man, head over heals in love with Jesus. He shows a tenderness at odds with his strict, stern veneer.

I had a lump in my throat when he described "three wounds from God". More than once, I was pierced with conviction.

As a spirit-filled Christian, I will treasure this little jewel of Tozer's.

A message from God:
A message from God: In this day and age, of watered down Christianity, it is good to drink from the source of living water. Tozer, filled with the Holy Spirit, pours forth living waters to anyone who would take and drink. With a trumpeted sound, Tozer speaks to this generation and its tragic blindness, of grieving the Holy Spirit. He captivates the listeners by encouraging them to make strait paths for the Holy Spirit to fill their hearts. He gives 5 vows by which any believer can enter the deeper life of joy unspeakable and maintaining the fullness of the Spirit. For you who are unsatisfied with today's Christianity and longing for spiritual perfection, walking in the Spirit without satisfying the lust within, Tozer, here, has given real food and real drink. He has confirmed what the Holy Spirit has been working in me these last 10 years. God truly is using Tozer's words to warn this generation, the kingdom of God is near.

I strongly recommend all of Tozer's work for good spiritual growth, and all books by E.M.Bounds to for a strong prayer life.

A genuine Saint
Lyle Dorsett has carefully thumbed through the sermons that Tozer gave at Wheaton college and has collected them in a concise yet very helpful book. In A.W. Tozer we see a man of God, who held a robust view of the Holy Spirit, during a time when not everyone held such a view. A must read for anyone interested in Tozer and the Holy Spirit.

And It Was Good, Reflections on Beginnings (Wheaton Literary Series)
Published in Hardcover by Harold Shaw Pub (March, 2000)
Author: Madeleine L'Engle
Average review score:

'And It Was Good'...is an understatement!
This book wasn't just good, it was brilliant. So far, this is my favorite Madeline L'Engle book because she combines her own personal reflections with her fascinating fiction in a book that was hard to put down. I had to check the date twice to see that it was published in 1984....I was like, "Are you kidding, me?" It reads like it's more contemporary and timely than ever and that is always a good sign with any book (stand the test of time).

I heard about this book through a friend of a friend whom I didn't know and went out on a limb and bought it....and now, I think I may have found another author (apart from Brennan Manning) who is so challenging, insightful and exhilerating, you can't help but sit back, breathe deep and simply thank God for her words.

Insightful
This wonderful book is Madeline L'Engle's meditations on the Gospel of John and Genesis and how her sprituality relates to her life, bound up in a tale of her sea voyage on a freighter. It reads like much of her fiction, engaging rather than didactic. She does take some unusual approaches to the stories in Genesis, some of which I found a little disturbing, but basically I loved this book, and have reread it many times.

Wonderfully written
L'Engle shows us once again how diverse a writer she is. This book is not bound by time or space, but can take us into worlds yet to be discovered. L'Engle has ways to make even the strangest possibilities come to life, and any person, L'Engle fan or not, will be deeply engrossed in this amazing book

Christ Alone (Today's Issues (Wheaton, Ill.).)
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (March, 2000)
Authors: Rod Rosenbladt and James Montgomery Boice
Average review score:

Buy this book!
I really like the Today's Issues series, and this is the best I've read of them. The series contains a similar booklet called Is Jesus the Only Way? Why two books on this subject? This one treats the problem from a theological perspective while the other treats it from a scriptural perspective. My preference is strongly with this version, as I find that non-Christians tend not to understand the "because the Bible says so" explanation.

Dr. Rosenbladt defends the sufficiency and necessity of Christ's atonement not just from salvation through other religions, but also from the semi-Pelagianism of believing we can make ourselves worthy to receive Christ's gift. There seems to be a trend among Christians to believe that through righteous living we can make ourselves acceptable to God, or that God grants us salvation because of our faith. Dr. Rosenbladt exposes the errors in these ways of thinking and expounds the true Gospel message that salvation is a free gift from God for the sake of Christ's suffering alone.

Concise, cogent, and conservative.
If brevity is the soul of witt, then this book is filled with sagacity. With so many opptions available to a person living in a consumeristic society, Christ Alone may seem a bit old fashioned. DR. Rod minces no words in his affirmation that Christ alone is the center of all that is related to the church and its witness in the world. He strongly affirms the place of Christ centeredness in the Word and Sacraments. Perhaps the greatest challenge to the preacher living in such a postmodern age is the challenge to one's faith. This booklet will challenge your faith. Do you really believe that Christ alone, in the Word and sacrament, is the sufficient power of God unto salvation to all who will believe? The pragmatism and church growth practices of the day, hover over the contemporary church, like the morning mist on the Smokie Mountains. Rosenbladt drops the gauntlet by appealing to church leaders to stand up for Christ, and plackard Him as the only means of salvation. Christ is not our lover, therapist, finacial advisor or even our moral example. He is more, so much more. Humanity's greatest need is to be reconciled to God and Christ is the only mediator. This makes Him our Lord and Savior alone. Everything else that Christ may provide is merely icing on the cake. As it has been said;" Anything this side of hell is grace." Therefore all we truly need is Christ, and Christ alone is all we need. This booklet will challenge one to stand on Christ as our true sufficiency.

The Grace of Repentance (Today's Issues (Wheaton, Ill.).)
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (February, 2000)
Author: Sinclair B. Ferguson
Average review score:

Doctrine of Repentance
An excellent work on the doctrine of repentance. I have seen very little in print regarding the doctrine of repentance which I find to be rather odd with the plethora of books available in theology--perhaps because it is such a convicting topic. I find that the evangelical church is weak in this area as well as in the doctrine of sin. Though relatively brief Dr. Ferguson hits the nail right on the head and gets straight to the point in a very readable book. He weaves this important doctrine into the overall doctrine of God's grace.

A Brief Book With a Powerful Punch!
In a mere 48 pages, Ferguson takes a topic that is scarcely written about and reveals what is at the heart of repentance. Drawing upon Luther's 1st of 95 Theses, he maintains that Christianity does not just begin with an act of repentance, but is marked by an entire life of repentance. In addition to helpful bibilical analysis, he offers a warning to the contemporary church against lapsing into Medieval religious practices. All in all, a clear and warm balance of truth and grace!

Codename Greenkil: The 1979 Greensboro Killings
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (October, 1987)
Author: Elizabeth Wheaton
Average review score:

An Extraordiny Book About Racism
I lived in Greensboro, NC when the the events in this book took place. Ms. Wheaton has done a remarkable job of research, in addition to naming names and defining the racist nature of the actions and the cover up. So sadly, it was no surprise that these events took place in my former city. It was also no surprise that the collaboration between the police/Klan/lawyers/
city officials convinced the 'jury' that the so-called officials had acted properly. In this year it perhaps becomes a more important read than when it was first published.

Dancing Barefoot: five short but true stories about life in the so-called space age
Published in Paperback by Monolith Press (May, 2003)
Authors: Wil Wheaton and Ben Claassen III
Average review score:

Short but sweet.
I bought "Dancing Barefoot" because I thought, "Hey, I enjoy reading Wil Wheaton's blog and he's really funny, so I'll enjoy his book, right?"

Right.

Even though I've read these stories on his blog before, there's something about having a book in one's hands that makes the experience even better and more personal.

About the stories: there are five of them, and all are funny, touching, and true. I suppose that's what makes the stories even better than they would be just by themselves; the personalized voice of each and the fact that they are true give honest glimpses into a person's life.

Wil's use of humor in his vignettes make the reading time fly by. Aside from getting his funny on, he also offers a few surprisingly heartfelt musings on certain aspects of his professional life, especially when it comes to meeting a certain childhood hero. By far, the best story is the last, "The Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants."

My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer, and as far as complaints so, that's small potatoes. This does offer a taste of what to expect from Wil Wheaton's forthcoming book, "Just a Geek." I can't wait. Well, I can, but I don't want to.

Anyway, buy it, read it, and enjoy it.

Wil Wheaton has done it and done it well!
Wil Wheaton is an amazing author that thousands of people read every single day online at wilwheaton.net. The way that Wheaton expresses his emotions on the web has been transferred on to paper in a truly genius manner. There is eloquence in the way he thinks, the way he jokes, and especially in the way he writes. Wil Wheaton is speaking to the masses the same cleverly sarcastic and thoughtful way, but through a different medium. I now have Wil on the comfort of my couch, not just at my computer. As a huge fan and an avid reader of WWDN, I congratulate Wil on an inspiring book. In two words beginning with H, Dancing Barefoot is heartwarming and hilarious.

What and AWSOME book.
I'm and avid fan of WIL WHEATON, and during the several times i check his website, i discovered he was writing a book. When i new it was finally done, i quickly placed an order. This book is not the typical book written by a celebrity. This book is real, just like his website. The stories that are in the book are great and well written. And they are the most popular stories that have been on his site. Through his stories you see what Wil has been doing since his days in the Star Trek genre. The stories vary from playing games with his stepkids, enjoying the falling rain with his wife Anne, or his very first encounter with William Shatner. And now how he has re-embraced his Star Trek past.

I STRONGLY reccomend everyone purchase this book, and visit his website. I for one has enjoyed the book from cover to cover, and look forward to the upcoming book "Just A Geek"

This book is well deserving of the 5 STARS
